President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today in Kamadhoo, Baa Atoll, that he opposes developing tarred or brick roads on islands like Kamadhoo where local tourism is thriving.
Speaking during his visit to Kamadhoo, as part of his four-day tour to 13 inhabited islands in the atoll, the President stressed the importance of preserving natural beauty in tourism-driven communities. He noted that even well-built roads should be planned in a way that does not compromise the island’s environment, in line with residents’ wishes.
He added that when road construction is necessary, the government will explore ways to bring economic benefits to the community. He also pledged to find a sustainable solution to land erosion and confirmed plans to construct the island’s harbour.

Two development agreements were signed during the visit: one for the construction of a new school facility, signed by Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu and Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation’s Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel; and another to introduce seaplane services to the island, signed by Island Aviation Services Limited’s Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas and Hawks Hotel Director Hussain Aman.
The President said the new school would address the island’s educational space and resource needs, while the seaplane service would help boost the local economy. He also announced that an agreement will be signed next month to expand hospital space and facilities, which will allow services to be extended to 16 hours a day.
In Kudarikilu, the President reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on campaign pledges. He said progress is being made to address public concerns and that work on stalled water and sanitation projects will resume in August, to be completed within six months from September. Road construction on the island will begin after water and sewerage works are finished, to be carried out by the Road Development Corporation.
The President also outlined education and health projects, including a multi-purpose hall after school renovations, a new health centre, and a new mosque once land allocation is completed. He added that work to finish the island’s football field will begin this month, alongside plans for a fitness and recreation centre and a handball court.
President Muizzu assured residents that these projects will be implemented swiftly and under close supervision.
