President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today that the right to freedom of expression exists within limitations, speaking at the National Day ceremony held in Utheemu, Haa Alifu Atoll.
In his address, the President said the National Day remains tied to the reason the Maldives continues to be an independent nation. He emphasised the importance of reflecting on national identity and reviving cultural values and traditions that encourage respect for parents, elders, and neighbours.
“We should acknowledge that each of us possesses the same dignity, and we must be committed to honouring the traditions that existed in this country in the past,” he said, adding that no one has the right to infringe upon the rights of others.
He stressed that freedom of expression does not mean saying whatever comes to mind without consideration.

“It is not within my freedom to infringe upon another’s freedom, to spread lies, or to kill someone’s dignity,” he said.
The President further noted that once words are spoken, they take control over the speaker and the responsibility that comes with expression.
Highlighting the country’s heritage and values, President Muizzu said freedom of expression exists within a specific context, shaped by faith and tradition, and called on citizens to uphold these values to ensure a safe and secure future for the nation.
At the ceremony, the President also conferred national honours, presenting the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty (ODRDD) to Adam Abdul Rahman, awarding the National Award of Honour to three recipients, and presenting the National Award of Recognition to nine individuals and one company. He congratulated all honourees for their contributions to the nation.
