President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase III is expected to be completed next month, with works in Giraavarufalhu due to finish by the end of March 2026.

In a post on his official X account yesterday, the President announced further progress in the ongoing land reclamation programme, confirming that the dredger TSHD Prins Der Nederlanden arrived and will begin operations in Hulhumalé Phase III on Wednesday. The vessel will work alongside TSHD Oranji, which has already been mobilised in the area.

He said bund wall works in Giraavaru Falhu will begin once the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and other required formalities are completed. Reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase III is scheduled to finish by the end of next month, after which both dredgers will be deployed to Giraavaru Falhu. Land reclamation there is expected to conclude within two to three months.

Speaking at a meeting with Machangoalhi residents last night, held as part of his serial meetings with Malé residents, the President said the area to be reclaimed in the Giraavaru Falhu will be identified once the EIA has been completed.

“Therefore, Giraavaru Falhu will be reclaimed by the end of March,” he said.

He added that the government will proceed with handing over land once reclamation is complete.

“Previously, land was allocated without reclaiming the land. As the people cannot use their lands, I pledged that [we] would reclaim the land and hand it over,” he said.

President Muizzu has previously said reclamation works across the Malé region—central to the government’s housing plans—are progressing swiftly, with further acceleration expected in December as additional dredgers are deployed.
