President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the incumbent and MDP candidate, acknowledged that there were aspects of the election that were not fully understood previously.
In response to questions about seeking support from former President Mohamed Nasheed in the upcoming second round on the 30th of this month, Solih indicated that the MDP would need to collaborate with various individuals and groups.
He also mentioned the potential involvement of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)and expressed a willingness to work together towards common goals.
Solih was cautious when asked about his confidence in the second round, stating that he needed time to consider the situation further.
Regarding the unexpected outcome of the election, Solih mentioned unforeseen factors that played a role in his initial failure to secure victory. MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail also expressed surprise at the result, citing lower voter turnout as a contributing factor. The MDP had aimed to secure a first-round victory with 57 percent of the vote, but this goal was not realised.
As preparations for the second round of the election remain undecided, President Solih emphasised that no coalition agreements had been formed thus far.
