President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for increased investment in Maldivian youth, highlighting their pivotal role in ensuring long-term national stability and prosperity amid the country’s demographic transition.
In a message to mark World Population Day, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for young people. He outlined key priorities, including flexible work arrangements, affordable housing, accessible childcare, and equitable access to quality education and healthcare.
President Muizzu also stressed the need to support youth in making informed life decisions. He underscored the importance of comprehensive healthcare services, counselling, and reproductive health support in preparing young people for the future.
The President noted that projections indicate one-fifth of the population will be over the age of 65 by 2062, necessitating long-term planning and the development of a comprehensive national population policy.
He reiterated these points on his official X account, stating that his government is committed to equipping youth with the skills and resources to navigate the challenges posed by an ageing society.
Observed annually on 11 July, World Population Day aims to raise awareness of population-related issues and promote sustainable development. This year’s theme centres on investing in youth as a strategic response to shifting demographics worldwide.
