Protests Erupt Over Delays in Housing Scheme Beneficiary List
Protests erupted yesterday at the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development as frustrations mounted over delays in the publication of the beneficiary list for flats allocated under the government’s Gedhoruveriyaa housing scheme.
The ministry had previously set multiple deadlines for the release of the list, most recently committing to publish it before the end of last week. However, a press statement issued by the ministry announced an indefinite postponement, citing the need for further review.

Crowds gathered outside the ministry’s premises to voice their dissatisfaction, with videos circulating on social media showing some protesters entering the building. Demonstrators are demanding greater transparency and accountability for the repeated delays.
In its press release, the ministry attributed the delay to an ongoing review of the allocation process. The Housing Advisory and Housing Consultative Committees, established under the guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, are currently assessing the list of beneficiaries for the 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme.

The allocation process has faced scrutiny since the previous administration declared that 18,167 out of 20,697 applicants were eligible. A subsequent investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), spanning two months, revealed that 60 per cent of those included in the permanent list had not met the eligibility criteria.
Protesters are urging the government to expedite the process while ensuring that the allocation adheres to fairness and transparency. The ministry has yet to provide a timeline for the completion of the review and the publication of the final list.
