The Ministry of Construction and Housing has announced that the Addu Hankede Bridge is now open to public transportation.

The 1.4 km bridge, which connects Hithadhoo and Maradhoo, was developed as part of the broader Addu road construction project and features four lanes. Practical work on the bridge commenced in October 2021 under the Indian Line of Credit, with the project officially handed over to the Maldivian government in August last year by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during his visit to Addu.

The Ministry had previously stated that the bridge remained closed due to ongoing technical surveys, prompting concerns from both the city council and residents over delays in opening the road. The entire project, including the inner roads of Addu, was carried out at a cost of MVR 1.19 billion.

With the opening of the Hankede Bridge, the existing link road across Hankede will be closed to public transportation. The island itself is planned for tourism development, with the foundation stone already laid for the Hankede Integrated Tourism Development Project. The initiative, one of the largest of its kind in Addu, aims to introduce a total of 1,041 rooms with 2,082 beds across two grand hotels, two deluxe hotels, 10 boutique hotels, 64 serviced apartments, and seven beach villas.
