Today’s scheduled session of the Majlis was called off due to the absence of the necessary quorum.

Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, expressed his disappointment at the situation, highlighting that the 22 members required to initiate today’s session were not present within the House.

Nasheed pointed out that some Members of Parliament appeared to be avoiding their parliamentary duties by not attending the floor, despite the looming second round of the presidential election scheduled for the upcoming Saturday.

After waiting for ten minutes in hopes of achieving the necessary quorum, Nasheed declared today’s session untenable. He indicated that he would consult with the MDP to determine whether party members would be present for tomorrow’s session.

The primary item on today’s agenda was the letter from the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) concerning the parliamentary resolution to hold a referendum on altering Maldives’s current system of government.

ECM expressed a need for clarity regarding the topics and questions to be addressed in the vote. However, the parliament had not yet shared this information with the commission, according to Vice Chairman and Spokesperson of ECM, Ismail Habeeb.
