Rasmale’ Project Advances with 182 Hectares Reclaimed, Says Gov’t

The government has confirmed that the Rasmale’ project is advancing steadily, with 182.85 hectares of land successfully dredged to date.

The large-scale initiative aims to reclaim a total of 1,009 hectares across 12 distinct areas, transforming the region into a sustainable ecocity.

Progress reports indicate substantial work by the three main contractors. Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction has completed its 29-hectare segment, while India’s Mohan Mutha has dredged 100.6 hectares of its 394-hectare allocation, with preparations underway for the remaining areas. China Harbor Engineering has reclaimed 53.25 hectares out of its assigned 265 hectares.

President Dr Muizzu inspected the dredging operations this week, reaffirming his commitment to accelerate the project. He announced that a 45,000-tonne hopper dredger is expected to arrive this month, which is expected to significantly boost the pace of work. The President expressed confidence that the current dredging phase would be completed within five months, with plans to expand reclamation efforts in the Malé area and other atolls from December.

During this year’s Republic Day ceremony, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the project’s potential to provide a permanent solution to the capital’s housing crisis. He revealed that enough land for 15,000 plots is expected to be dredged over the next five months, with further details on the application process to be announced soon.

Beyond housing, the Rasmale’ project is expected to unlock various economic opportunities under its Master Plan, aligning with the government’s 2023 initiative to develop the area as a pioneering ecocity.
