Reclamation works at Rasmale’ Site A have reached 71 hectares out of the planned 137.5 hectares, representing an overall completion rate of 51.64%, according to the latest project update.
The update, released today, shows that seven hectares have been reclaimed in the past week, up from 64 hectares reported on 7 January. Work on the site began on 1 December and is being carried out using Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s two largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, with a capacity of 46,000 cubic metres. The dredger is operated by Jan De Nul.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has previously stated that the project aims for an average reclamation rate of 1.5 hectares per day. Once reclamation is complete, development will proceed according to the Rasmale’ Master Plan, which envisions an eco-city equipped with full municipal infrastructure. The government has confirmed that it is seeking a consultant to finalise the Master Plan and is preparing to open applications for housing schemes in the area.
The government had previously said that the deadline they have set for the complete reclamation of Rasmale is April of this year.
