Valued at USD 4.6 million, the project aims to replace the island’s ageing infrastructure, which has caused recurring problems for more than a decade. The agreement was signed by the Minister of State for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Hassan Rasheed, and RDC’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Nazeem.
Scheduled for completion within 700 days, the project involves the full replacement of the existing system with a conventional gravity-based sewerage network. The works include laying new pipes across the island, constructing a sewage pumping station, installing a sewerage junction, and developing a sea outfall, along with other supporting facilities.
The initiative follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s announcement in July that the project would be launched to address the persistent challenges faced by the community. The administration emphasised that a complete overhaul was necessary to ensure lasting improvements.
The new system is expected to significantly enhance public health and sanitation standards for the residents of Manadhoo.
