The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has confirmed that a public referendum will be held in Addu City on 25 October to decide whether three islands in the southern city should be separated and granted independent island councils.
Voting will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with the official results scheduled to be announced the following day, Sunday, 26 October.
The referendum will determine whether separate councils should be established for Addu Feydhoo, Addu Hulhudhoo, and Addu Meedhoo, or whether a single Addu Hulhumeedhoo Council should be formed to administer both Addu Hulhudhoo and Addu Meedhoo.
The decision to conduct the referendum follows Cabinet approval on 5 October to proceed in accordance with the Public Referendum Act, after residents submitted a petition seeking changes to the current administrative structure of the Addu City Council.
In preparation for the vote, the ECM has opened applications for election officials, with the deadline set for 2:00 p.m. on 13 October. Selected officials will undergo training from 15 to 21 October.
According to the ECM, payments for election officials will range between MVR 2,150 and MVR 2,550 depending on their assigned roles, while reserve officials will receive MVR 700.
