The National Drug Agency (NDA) has announced plans to establish rehabilitation treatment centers in three regions across the country, comprising Laamu Atoll, K Kaashidhoo, and N. Velidhoo.

Under the provisions of the Drugs Act, discussions have been initiated by the Agency to collaborate with private entities, both domestically and internationally, to set up these essential facilities.

In line with recommendations put forth by the Cabinet, a community-based approach to rehabilitation has been advocated as a viable method for assisting drug users on the path to recovery.

Laamu atoll has been identified as one of the regions where this initiative will be implemented. To gain insights into the prevailing drug landscape in the area, a delegation from the National Drug Agency conducted a thorough assessment across 11 islands within the Laamu Atoll from the 24th to the 28th of this month.

During their visit, representatives engaged with local councils on islands including Fonadhoo, Gan, Maavah, Isdhoo, Kalaidhoo, Hithadhoo, Mundoo, Kunahandhoo, Gaadhoo, and Mahibadhoo. This collaborative effort aimed to understand the unique challenges faced by each community in combating drug misuse.

The Ministry’s Spokesperson informed MV+ that the selection of the Laamu atoll island for the proposed rehab center will be determined following this visit.

Following the assessment, the NDA intends to work closely with the Atoll Council to tailor rehabilitation programs that are responsive to the specific needs identified during the consultation process.
