Republic Square Fountain Set to Reopen for Eid al-Fitr After Repairs
The water fountain situated in the Republic Square of the Maldivian capital is poised to resume operations following necessary repairs in time for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
Previously, the Local Government Ministry had indicated that the fountain would be reinstated during Ramadan. However, in an announcement this morning via X platform, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar confirmed that efforts to mend and reopen the water feature ahead of Eid are progressing vigorously.
Umar highlighted the deterioration of the fountain, stating that urgent measures are being undertaken to restore its functionality, prompted by a special request from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Constructed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the water fountain spans an impressive 28 meters in both width and length. It was inaugurated during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
Notably, in 2022, when Muizzu was serving as Male’ City Mayor, he criticised the government for its perceived neglect in maintaining the fountain.
