A meeting took place in Malé yesterday between Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef and members of the Hirimaradhoo Council. Following the meeting, Minister Shareef shared updates on the social media platform ‘X,’ along with photos from the discussion.
Minister Shareef stated that the decision to seek relocation was made by the people of Hirimaradhoo, as communicated through the council. The community has expressed a desire to relocate to Thulusdhoo, citing various concerns.
Hirimaradhoo is the least populated island in the Haa Dhaalu atoll, with the most recent 2022 census recording a population of 293, of which 260 are residents. However, the island’s registry reflects a total of 584 individuals.
The last instance of relocation within the atoll occurred in 2011, when the residents of Maavaidhoo, Kunburudhoo, and Faridhoo were moved to Nolhivaranfaru.
This latest request underscores ongoing challenges faced by smaller island communities in the Maldives, as they seek opportunities for better living conditions and resources through relocation.
