The Managing Director of the State Electric Company (STELCO), Hussain Fahmy, has called on the public to be mindful of electricity consumption, as both electricity usage and perceived temperatures continue to rise in the Malé region.

Fahmy, in a statement shared via social media on Saturday, highlighted a significant increase in consumption over recent days. The highest usage recorded so far this year occurred on Thursday, when demand peaked at approximately 114 megawatts (MW) around 3:00 p.m. Electricity load remained high into the early hours of Friday, with usage reaching 111 MW at around 1:00 a.m.

He attributed the rising demand to increasing temperatures and advised residents to adopt energy-saving measures. Recommendations included setting air conditioning units no lower than 25 degrees Celsius and limiting the use of electrical appliances when not essential.

STELCO has been issuing regular updates on electricity consumption in Malé. According to the utility provider, electricity demand has risen steadily since the end of Ramadan. Average peak usage in recent days has consistently exceeded 100 MW, a notable increase compared to pre-Ramadan levels.

Fahmy emphasised the importance of reducing electricity consumption, not only to lower individual costs but also to ease the strain on the city’s power infrastructure and support broader social welfare.
