The number of road accidents reported in Malé, the Sinamale’ Bridge, and the highway during the first week of February was slightly lower than in the same period in January, according to police statistics

From 1 to 7 February, a total of 63 accidents were recorded, compared with 67 incidents in the first week of January. Malé City accounted for the majority of cases, with 47 accidents, while 16 occurred on the bridge and highway.

The highest number of accidents in a single day was reported on 5 February, when 16 incidents occurred. The first day of the month saw 12 accidents. Most collisions took place during daytime hours, with motorcycle-related accidents dominating the week’s reports. Police recorded 23 motorcycle-to-motorcycle collisions, 15 motorcycle-to-car collisions, and several other incidents, including hit-and-run cases and accidents in which riders fell on their own.

In terms of severity, 62 accidents resulted in minor injuries, while one case caused a serious injury. Police noted that motorcycles continue to be involved in the majority of road incidents in the capital and urged drivers to follow traffic rules and remain vigilant. Recent dangerous accidents on both Malé roads and the Sinamale’ Bridge have, in some cases, led to permanent injuries.

So far this year, police have received 1,325 reports, including 380 road accidents. Authorities have repeatedly emphasised the importance of safer driving practices, particularly given the city’s high traffic density and large number of motorcycles, which contribute to frequent collisions.
