The road development for the Addu Gan International Airport project has been completed, marking a major milestone in the redevelopment of the southern atoll’s key transportation hub.

Addu International Airport Company (AIA) Managing Director Mohamed Waheed Hussain confirmed that the 4.3 km of new road is finished, with final traffic markings currently being applied.

The project, funded through the Indian Line of Credit, aims to transform the airport into a modern facility capable of handling 1.5 million passengers annually. Previous development efforts were delayed by a series of challenges over several years.

With the roadwork nearing completion, focus has now shifted to the expansion of the airport’s terminal. Two new terminal extensions are under construction, including a 15-metre addition on one side and a 75-metre extension on the other. Although the official timeline anticipates completion by the end of this year, project officials have acknowledged the possibility of delays.

The current phase of construction is intended to support the upcoming modernisation of the existing terminal, which will eventually feature advanced passenger facilities. Waheed noted the difficulties of maintaining airport operations while construction continues but expressed confidence that the project would be finished by early next year.

The project has faced public concern over the removal of old shelter trees to make way for the new road. In response, the airport is planting large new sheltering trees along both sides of the newly paved roads.
