Physical works have commenced on a major infrastructure project aimed at modernising the road networks of Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo in Laamu Atoll.

The project was formally inaugurated in October 2025 during an official visit by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and has been awarded to the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

Under the initiative, asphalt will be laid across 4.39 kilometres of roads in the two administrative zones, which are located on the same island. The project represents an investment of more than USD 6.48 million and is expected to benefit a combined population of over 1,600 residents.

The road upgrades will primarily focus on key roads and important access routes leading to public service institutions and administrative offices.

In addition to road surfacing, the project includes the installation of stormwater drainage systems designed to reduce the risk of flooding and improve the long-term durability of the road infrastructure.

The development forms part of a broader regional connectivity plan that also includes the construction of a 315-metre causeway linking Kalaidhoo with the neighbouring island of Dhan’bidhoo.

The causeway project, which was also launched during President Muizzu’s October visit, has been awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company.

Once completed, the new transport link will connect the communities of Dhan’bidhoo, Kalaidhoo and Isdhoo, improving movement between the islands and benefiting a population of more than 3,500 people. Officials expect the improved connectivity to ease travel for residents and support economic and social development in the region.
