Practical work has commenced to upgrade roads in the Malé City market area to modern standards, as part of a broader effort to ease congestion and improve infrastructure in one of the capital’s busiest zones.
The Malé harbour area is among the most heavily used parts of the city, serving residents, cargo vehicles and vessels on a daily basis. The area is home to the fish market, local market, traveller’s market and the port, contributing to persistent traffic congestion and infrastructure strain.
The current road development project covers a 250-metre stretch from the Local Market area to the North Harbour. Initial works include excavation and the relocation of utilities, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, Malé Water and Sewerage Company, and State Electric Company Limited involved in the process.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government aims to complete the upgrade before Ramadan. Once completed, the road will be converted into a two-way street to improve traffic flow.
Meanwhile, the first segment of the Boduthakurufaanu Road development project has already been completed under Phase I, covering 140 metres. The full project is planned to develop a total stretch of 1,088 metres from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour.
