Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam suffered a notable loss on Saturday in the internal primary election of the main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Competing for the newly introduced North Feydhoo seat, Rozaina – who is currently serving her third consecutive term in Parliament – was defeated by Ahmed Shareef. Shareef secured the district’s ticket with 251 votes compared to Rozaina’s 221 and Ahmed Hamza’s 206.
Another incumbent MP, Kelaa MP Ibrahim Shareef, also faced defeat in the primary.
MDP conducted primaries for 40 electoral districts, with a total of 25,325 eligible voters participating.
Ballot boxes were placed in 95 islands, including 26 in the greater Male’ area.
More than 40 of the party’s candidates have already secured tickets, with most having run unopposed or due to the withdrawal of other candidates. Among them are several incumbent MPs, including Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Raee, Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood, Dhaandhoo MP Yauqoob Abdulla, South Galolhu MP Ahmed Meekail Naseem, and South Henveiru MP Hussain Shaheem.
MDP enjoyed a significant victory in the 2019 elections, securing a supermajority in Parliament with 65 out of 87 seats. Since then, the party’s influence has seen a decline following their loss to PPM-PNC in last year’s presidential elections.
