Sabudheli Magu, a thoroughfare that has been off-limits to the public for a span of six years, was reopened last night.

Situated to the north of Hiriya School, the reopening follows extensive efforts by the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, a project initiated on January 6.

The Ministry’s initial announcement explained that the reopening aimed to alleviate traffic congestion stemming from ongoing reconstruction on Ameenee Magu. It is noteworthy that Ameenee Magu has since been completed and is now accessible to the public.

Sabudheli Magu’s closure dates back to the tenure of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his role as Housing Minister. Originally intended for a luxury housing project, named Coral Boulevard and planned near Rasfannu Beach, the site has seen no progress on the envisaged development.

Coral Boulevard was entrusted to Singapore’s Chang Hua Construction company during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, with a commitment to complete the project by the end of 2020. The foundation for the building was laid, and the agreement stipulated that 120 flats from the project’s four towers would be allocated to the government.

However, the project underwent a transfer to Hulhumale’, and the initially designated land has remained deserted and sealed off. The reopening of Sabudheli Magu now invites a reflection on the history of the site, from its closure during Muizzu’s term to the current state of the dormant Coral Boulevard luxury housing project.
