Schools across the Maldives have reopened for the second term of the current academic year after a 16-day break.
The academic year began on 7 April, with schools closing for the mid-year break on 24 July following the end of the first term. According to the Ministry of Education, there are around 84,000 students enrolled in schools nationwide, supported by approximately 11,000 teachers, of whom 10,000 are employed in public schools.
The academic calendar, which was shifted to a mid-year start during the previous administration, is set to revert to a January start from next year. The second term will run until 25 December, after which students will have an extended break from 28 December until the new academic year begins on 22 January.
