The Ministry of Education has announced that schools will conduct classes for only one week during Ramadan this year, according to the academic calendar released yesterday for the new school year.

The calendar outlines school terms, holidays, public holidays and other key dates. Students are scheduled to return to school on Tuesday, 27 January, following the month-long year-end break. This marks the first time the academic year will begin midweek, as schools have traditionally reopened on Sundays, aligning with the start of the Maldivian work week. Classes will then continue for 16 days before the start of the holy month of Ramadan on 18 February.

Teaching will continue until the end of February. From 1 to 8 March, teachers will observe Professional Development (PD) Days, during which students will not attend school.

The final 10 days of Ramadan will be observed from 9 to 19 March, during which public offices and schools will be closed as well. Schools will reopen on 23 March, after a 26-day break for students during the Ramadan period.

The Ministry said the adjusted schedule is reflected in the official academic calendar for the year.
