Sea ambulance services officially commenced in N. Velidhoo yesterday, expanding emergency medical transport options across Noonu Atoll.
Prior to the launch, Manadhoo was the only island in the atoll equipped with a sea ambulance. The Ministry of Defence stated that the introduction of the service in Velidhoo is expected to significantly ease patient transfers and strengthen the atoll’s emergency response network.
The ministry noted that Velidhoo has been developing as a hub for safari vessels and local tourism, and that the new service will support the island’s growing economic activities. The availability of sea ambulance services is expected to enhance health security, improve emergency treatment capabilities, and increase confidence among businesses, investors and workers in the tourism sector.
The service is also expected to improve connectivity between regional hospitals within Noonu Atoll and enhance access to timely medical care for residents.
According to the Ministry of Defence, sea ambulance services are planned to be established in nine additional islands this year, while services will also resume in three islands.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health handed over 56 land ambulances to islands across the country on 17 January. The ambulances were delivered in three batches, and the ministry has announced plans to provide new ambulances to a further 31 islands this year. In addition, 10 paramedic ambulances are set to be introduced to strengthen emergency medical services in Malé and other urban centres.
In a related development, national airline Maldivian launched seaplane flights to Velidhoo last Friday, further improving transport connectivity to the island.
