Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen revealed that a lasting solution to the ongoing issue of Seafarers Identity Document (SID) and Seaman Book non-issuance will be implemented within the next five months, in a press conference yesterday.
The move aligns with International Labour Organisation (ILO) regulations, addressing concerns about the standards for SID issuance.
Minister Ameen shared insights into the Ministry of Transport’s initiatives over the past 40 days under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. Acknowledging discrepancies in SID issuance by high-level shipping companies in the country, the Minister Ameen confirmed ongoing efforts to align the process with ILO regulations.
Minister Ameen announced that the ministry has collaborated with the government and immigration to align with ILO regulations, with the proposed changes currently under verification by the ILO to meet acceptable standards.
Despite the ILO’s recommended alterations to the SID, Minister Ameen expressed confidence that a permanent solution would be implemented within the stipulated five-month timeframe. The issuance of SID holds significance under international treaties to which the Maldives is a signatory, mandating every seafarer to possess this essential document.
Following multiple delays, Immigration initiated SID issuance in September, responding to complaints from seafarers. The immigration authorities assured the public that the process would include a temporary SID issuance while actively working towards a solution.
The commitment to resolving the SID issuance matter within the next five months reflects the government’s dedication to meeting international standards and ensuring seafarers’ compliance with ILO regulations.
