The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has launched the second batch of the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme, aimed at building national capacity and promoting sustainable growth within the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
The training, supported by the World Bank-funded Transform Project, commenced on 18 October in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll. Conducted by the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), the programme is designed to enhance expertise in sustainable marine aquaculture and encourage innovation in the field.
A total of 15 participants are taking part in the programme, which will run until 30 October. Participants are based in Maniyafushi throughout the course, with MMRI covering travel expenses between Malé and Maniyafushi for training purposes, along with food and accommodation.
The Basic Mariculture course includes lessons on aquaculture systems, live food cultivation, fish biology, and marine aquaculture. It also provides practical training in breeding four main species — groupers, sea cucumbers, Maldive anemone fish, and nacre — as well as guidance on seaweed cultivation, disease prevention, and environmental protection in mariculture operations.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the programme aims to strengthen the mariculture sector, create additional income and employment opportunities across the atolls, and support the diversification of the Maldivian economy.
Held twice a year, the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme continues to attract strong interest from participants nationwide. Last year, 15 participants from different regions completed the course, and the Ministry has stated that further training opportunities are planned for the future.
