The government has announced that the second phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu re-asphalting project, aimed at modernising the road, will commence this week.
The first segment of the project, located between the Fish Market and the Presidential Jetty, involved reclaiming part of the lagoon to expand the road to four lanes and laying new asphalt. Construction for this section began in August 2025, and Segment 1 of the extensive ring road development was completed and opened for use on 9th December.
Phase 2, which began the day after the completion of the first segment, will cover the southern side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, stretching from the Fish Market to the end of the North Harbour. This phase includes plans for further widening and resurfacing.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) stated that work on the sub-base for the second phase has already begun. Asphalt and ABC (aggregate base course) laying is scheduled to start this week, along with the installation of signboards and light posts, which are expected to be completed within the same period.
MTCC added that the road modernisation is expected to improve travel for both motorists and pedestrians.
The entire ring road project is funded through the state budget, with a total allocation of MVR 144 million. MTCC has been contracted to complete the full project within 455 days.
