Second Suspect in Hulhumale’ Axe Attack Remanded Pending Trial

The second suspect arrested in connection with the attack on a man with an axe in Hulhumale’ earlier this week has been ordered to remain in custody pending the outcome of the trial.

The incident occurred around 11:35 pm on Sunday when two men, riding a motorcycle, attacked a man with an axe as he waited outside the western end of the Rehendhi Turf Stadium on Bougainville Magu.

The two suspects, Saifulla Faisal, 19, from Finifenmaage, B. Goidhoo, and Rusthum Ibrahim, 25, from Heenamaage, GDh. Fiyoaree, were apprehended by police on the Hulhumale’ Highway while attempting to flee the scene.

At a remand hearing on Monday, the court ordered Saifulla to be jailed until the investigation and trial are concluded. Rusthum was initially remanded in police custody for three days. However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, the police confirmed that Rusthum’s remand had been reviewed and the court ordered him to remain in custody until the investigation and trial are completed.

The victim was injured in the attack and was taken to Hulhumale’ Hospital, where he was discharged later that night. The police are continuing their investigation into the case.

Boy Released, Four Suspects Remanded Over Hithadhoo Beating Incident

In a separate incident, four of the five suspects arrested for tying up and beating a man in the Hithadhoo district of Addu City on Tuesday morning have been remanded in police custody, while a 15-year-old boy involved in the attack has been released.

The victim, a 37-year-old Maldivian male, was discovered by police officers on patrol at around 01:35 am. The officers, who were patrolling near Milo Field in Hithadhoo, noticed a group of individuals fleeing the scene. Upon investigating, they found the victim tied to a traditional lounge chair, with half of his hair shaved off and signs of injury.

All five suspects were arrested at the scene. The adult suspects have been identified as Ali Maazin Hassan, 20, from Merry Garden, S. Hithadhoo; Ashraf Mohamed, 22, from Noothari, S. Hithadhoo; Mohamed Yaeesh Azaad, 19, from Grace, S. Hithadhoo; and Samah Thaufeeq, 20, from Vision Dream, S. Hithadhoo.

During their remand hearing, Samah and Ashraf were remanded in police custody for 15 days, while Yaeesh and Maazin were remanded for seven days. The 15-year-old boy was not presented before the court and was released into the custody of his family.

The police are continuing their investigation into this case as well.
