Seven Arrested in Maldives Over Prostitution Ring

MV+ News Desk | November 25, 2024

Authorities in the Maldives have arrested seven expatriates in connection with a large-scale prostitution ring. The group includes five women accused of engaging in prostitution and two men alleged to have acted as their agents.

Maldives Immigration announced on X that the arrests were made during a special operation conducted earlier this month in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service. The operation was part of investigations into five separate cases.

The individuals arrested have been identified as follows:

  • Suphatson Phukhao, Thailand (21 years)
  • Thabo Tsakani Maake, South Africa (42 years)
  • Hasifah Namakula, Uganda (36 years)
  • Asma Khatun, Bangladesh (36 years)
  • Mamun, Bangladesh (36 years)
  • Jahirul Islam, Bangladesh (37 years)
  • Zaira Ataeva, Russia (38 years)

Maldives Immigration reported that three of the individuals—Thabo Maake, Hasifah Namakula, and Zaira Ataeva—have already been deported. The remaining suspects are currently in detention, awaiting deportation.

The Maldives government has intensified efforts to address issues surrounding undocumented migrants and illegal activities involving foreign nationals. These efforts include regular raids on locations suspected of operating prostitution rings or engaging in other unlawful activities.

This crackdown aligns with broader measures taken by the current administration to tackle unregulated businesses and ensure compliance with immigration and labour laws.
