The Ministry of Social and Family Development has stated that seven percent of the population in the Maldives lives with a disability, emphasising the importance of providing them with special protection and care.
According to the Ministry, individuals with disabilities can live independently and be active members of society if they are given the necessary support. The Ministry further stressed the importance of involving people with disabilities in decision-making processes and in efforts to build an inclusive society.
It also highlighted the need to ensure access to education, experience, and skill-building opportunities for people with disabilities, noting that such efforts are essential in helping them build prosperous and self-sufficient families.
Earlier this year, Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim submitted an emergency motion to Parliament on 15 April, raising concerns over the alleged neglect of children and people with disabilities by relevant state institutions responsible for health care and social security. The motion was dismissed by the PNC-majority Parliament with 44 votes against it.
Following the motion’s dismissal, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim met with parents of children with disabilities to address their concerns. During the meeting, discussions were held on the therapies currently provided, challenges in accessing health services, and potential improvements in treatment.
