Several Ministers Resign as Government Shake-Up Continues
(From L to R) Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Tourism Shafeeq, Social Minister Aishath Shiham, Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim, Social Minister Aishath Shiham, and Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar, Youth Minister Ibrahim Waheed, and Agriculture Minister Maryam Mariya have resigned from their posts, according to multiple reports, though official confirmation has not yet been independently verified.
MV+ has sought confirmation from presidential spokesperson Heena Waleed, but has not yet received a response. However, local media outlet Mihaaru has reported that the President’s Office has confirmed the resignation of all six ministers.
The developments come amid a broader wave of resignations and dismissals across government-linked institutions following what has been described as unfavourable electoral outcomes for the administration. These include setbacks in the April 4 national referendum on merging parliamentary and presidential elections, as well as losses in the local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.
The referendum proposal, backed by the government and its candidates, failed to secure approval, a result that has since been followed by a series of leadership changes across key state bodies.
Neither the President’s Office nor the relevant ministries have issued detailed statements explaining the recent ministerial changes at the time of publication.
