The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has stated that water systems have been installed on 133 islands and sewerage systems on 146 islands across the Maldives’ 187 inhabited islands.
This update was provided during a session with the Environment and Climate Change Committee of Parliament, which is currently reviewing the Water and Sewerage Act Amendment Bill.
Permanent Secretary Ajwad Musthafa reported that water systems are presently being installed in 56 islands, while sewerage systems are under installation in 43 islands. He assured that the projects for the remaining islands will be completed by 2027, the deadline stipulated in the proposed amendment.
The five-year timeframe set out in the amendment aims to establish water and sewerage systems as public services, with ongoing upgrades expected for residential islands beyond the initial installation.
Deputy Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited, Mohamed Arif, stated that the company is upgrading water and sewerage systems on 98 islands. He added that the establishment of these services will be completed by 2027, with upgrades expected to conclude by 2028. Fenaka plans to make approximately 2,000 new connections and carry out necessary maintenance on various islands.
The amendment to the Water and Sewerage Act mandates that all inhabited islands in the Maldives must have adequate water and sewerage systems by 2027 at the latest.
