Ibrahim Shujau, the Member of Parliament for the Baarashu constituency, has been replaced on the Public Accounts Committee at the request of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) and reassigned to the National Development and Heritage Committee.
The announcement was made during Monday’s parliamentary sitting by Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Guraidhoo MP Hanan Mohamed Rasheed will replace Shujau on the committee.
The change comes as the Maldives Police Service investigates the circulation of a document on social media purporting to be a confidential Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) report. The document allegedly details transactions involving businesses owned by Shujau and two family members, claiming they received MVR 42.5 million from various state entities between November 2023 and January 2024. Among these, Quick Sure — reportedly linked to Shujau — is said to have received MVR 10.5 million from Malé City Council, where Shujau previously served before entering parliament in 2024.
Shujau, who is also vice president of the PNC, has publicly denied any wrongdoing and questioned the document’s authenticity. In a statement shared on social media platform X, he acknowledged the transactions mentioned but insisted that his businesses have always operated within the law.
“If this document is genuine, it appears to have been deliberately leaked to damage my reputation and business by presenting facts out of context,” Shujau wrote.
