Six people have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the Maldives in 2024, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA). As of October 31, 49 people in the country live with the condition, including seven women and 43 men.
The HPA reported that 16 individuals have died due to AIDS-related causes, while 32 others are currently receiving treatment.
The first case of HIV in the Maldives was reported several years ago, and the country has since provided free antiretroviral treatment (ART) to those living with HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is also available.
HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing of syringes or needles, from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, and through infected blood transfusions.
