Six-year-old Ibrahim Azan Suheil’s death has sparked public outrage over alleged delays by government authorities in providing essential medical equipment. His family claims the child passed away after waiting approximately eight months for a feeding tube from the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA).

Azan, who had Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, could only be fed via a feeding tube. According to a Facebook post by his family, the tube had been requested through Aasandha via the State Trading Organisation (STO) in August 2025 but was not delivered. By the time the equipment arrived, the child’s condition had deteriorated beyond the point where it could be safely administered.

The Health Ministry confirmed it is investigating Azan’s death in coordination with relevant agencies. Media reports cited that STO has said it is conducting an internal inquiry into the delay, while NSPA stated that the required feeding tube was eventually provided but has not commented on the timing of its delivery.

The government has faced intense criticism online, with many accusing authorities of taking “empty action” and questioning the value of an investigation at this stage. One commenter asked whether the ministry would ever complete its inquiry.

Azan was admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital last Sunday after his condition worsened. His mother, Aminath Yashfa, said she had repeatedly contacted STO and visited the Hulhumalé pharmacy due to the delay. She described the situation as desperate, noting that there were no alternative sources to obtain the tube.

Azan passed away yesterday around noon while receiving care in the ICU. His funeral took place after the Isha prayer last night.
