The event was organised jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The ceremony was officially launched by the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya, who planted the first coconut palm.
Officials from the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, and the HDC attended the event. Schoolchildren and senior citizens also took part in the tree-planting activity.
The initiative forms part of the government’s wider five million tree planting campaign, under which nearly 600,000 trees have been planted so far. The planting of coconut palms reflects their significance as the national tree of the Maldives and their value to island communities.
The Ministry has encouraged atolls across the country to follow Hulhumale’s example by planting more coconut palms to benefit the environment and local livelihoods.
