President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, emphasised the need for greater decentralisation within city councils.
President Solih expressed the view that city councils should avoid centralising power and instead delegate authority to the islands, during his presidential election campaign in Meedhoo, Addu City
President Solih outlined the current government’s approach, which involves empowering local councils by devolving certain powers held by the central government. He stressed the importance of maintaining a degree of decentralisation within city councils, particularly in the context of providing services to the separate islands within Addu City.
“We must allocate some central powers to other islands, even within city councils. Our focus should be on enhancing decentralisation, especially in delivering essential services to the distinct islands of Addu City,” President Solih remarked.
Given the geographic separation of Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo, the President underscored the need to initiate administrative, health, and education services from these islands and delegate authority to ensure convenient access to these services for the local populace.
President Solih highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering and decentralizing local councils. He noted that while certain powers have been legally transferred from the central government to the councils, the positive effects of decentralisation are increasingly evident in rural areas across the nation.
