President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has taken steps to address concerns and criticisms related to salary structures in the health and education sectors.

In response to widespread discontent among medical officers and nurses concerning alterations to their salary structures, Solih engaged in discussions with relevant authorities.

Likewise, concerns from workers in the education sector regarding retirement benefits for government job retirees were considered during these deliberations.

Miuvaan Mohamed, spokesperson at the President’s Office, explained that these changes were initiated to alleviate the challenges faced by doctors, nurses, and teachers. He emphasised that the alterations were the outcome of thorough consultations with stakeholders in the health and education sectors.

In addition to these healthcare sector reforms, Solih and the Ministry of Finance engaged in discussions concerning the concerns raised by education professionals and teachers regarding the state pay framework.

The outcome of these deliberations resulted in an extension of the deadline for employees to select their preferred pension and benefits plan.

Now, employees have the option to make this choice if they resign by January 2024, a departure from the previous requirement of 18 months after being transferred to the state pay framework.

Spokesperson Miuvaan noted that the President’s Office has instructed the National Pay Commission (NPC) and CSC to implement these changes promptly. It is anticipated that these revisions will address the challenges faced by workers in the health and education sectors.
