In accordance with international best practices, Speaker Nasheed voluntarily decided to abstain from presiding over parliamentary sittings until a decision is made on the no-confidence motion against him. He stressed that his decision was aimed at upholding the principles of fairness and transparency.
Furthermore, Speaker Nasheed emphasized that resigning from his position would not be in the best interests of the Parliament at this time. He suggested that it would be beneficial for the Parliament if the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) withdrew one of the no-confidence motions, allowing for a more constructive and unified approach.
During the press conference, Speaker Nasheed faced questions from journalists about the challenges he faces within the MDP. While acknowledging these challenges, he expressed his commitment to remaining with the party. However, when asked directly about his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election, Speaker Nasheed refrained from providing a definitive response.
Meanwhile, supporters of Speaker Nasheed have been involved in the formation of a new party called The Democrats. They have indicated that the new party intends to field a presidential candidate, indicating potential developments on the political landscape in the future.
