Speed breakers installed on roads in Hulhumale’ have been removed overnight following strong public criticism.
The traffic-calming measures were originally placed in September to reduce vehicle speeds amid heavy traffic and a high prevalence of accidents. However, residents and motorists had raised concerns that driving over the speed breakers, even at low speeds, caused back pain and other difficulties.
Calls for the removal of the speed breakers intensified, with many citing the inconvenience caused by the measures, which had been affixed through drilling into the tar-laid streets. These concerns were also raised during meetings recently held by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu with residents of districts in the Male’ region.
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC), which installed the speed breakers, previously stated that the measures were intended to ensure road safety. At the time, over 30 speed breakers had been placed across Hulhumale’.
