Presidential candidate of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has acknowledged that the pace of judiciary reform has not met his initial expectations due to other influences but he believes the speed of reform is not slow.

He stated this yesterday in an address in L. Fonadhoo.

President Solih noted that significant strides have been taken to enhance the credibility of the Supreme Court, which has now earned greater public trust. However, he highlighted the need for further effort in judiciary reform.

Reflecting on the first two to three years of the MDP government’s tenure, President Solih highlighted the substantial changes that have been implemented within the court system. While he expressed a strong desire for swifter progress, he acknowledged that various complex influences have contributed to a slower pace of reform than he had originally envisioned.

He addressed the gradual pace of reform over the past five years and clarified that he does not view it as an indication of stagnation.

As President Solih’s term in office approaches its last five-month mark, he reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to fulfill its promise of reforming the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). He acknowledged that consultations with various stakeholders have taken place and that the JSC reform bill has been submitted to the Parliament earlier for consideration.

While discussing the ongoing reform efforts, it’s noteworthy that some senior judges have lately raised concerns about the judiciary’s performance.
