Upon arrival, President Dissanayake received a ceremonial welcome in Malé. During the three-day visit, he held official talks with President Muizzu and witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and a treaty aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Following their official discussions, the two leaders delivered joint press statements, reaffirming their shared commitment to enhancing Maldives–Sri Lanka relations. President Muizzu also hosted a state banquet in honour of the visiting leader.

Several Maldivian Cabinet ministers and senior government officials paid courtesy calls on President Dissanayake during his stay.

This marks President Dissanayake’s first state visit to the Maldives since assuming office in September 2024. The visit also coincided with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, which began in 1965.

Symbolic Tree Planting at Sultan Park

As part of the state visit, a symbolic tree-planting ceremony took place at Sultan Park in Malé yesterday. President Muizzu joined President Dissanayake at the event, highlighting the close diplomatic partnership between the two countries.

President Dissanayake planted a Tanjong tree (Moonimaa) under the Maldives’ ‘Five Million Trees Planting Programme’. The act served as a gesture of goodwill and noted the countries’ shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
