Mohamed Fahumy Hassan, recently appointed as the State Minister for Foreign Affairs by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has been relieved of his duties just four days into his new role.
Fahumy assumed the position on Monday, joining two other state ministers in the newly formed government. The unexpected dismissal occurred amid President Muizzu’s ongoing appointments of key figures within his administration.
Formerly, Fahmy faced dismissal from both the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and his role as the President of the commission amid accusations of sexual harassment towards a female staff member.
In response to his dismissal, Fahmy lodged an appeal at the Supreme Court. In 2013, the court rendered a verdict declaring the invalidity of all points of his dismissal as determined by the Parliament.
Following this decision, he pursued compensation through the Civil Court, eventually succeeding as the court ruled in his favor, granting him the sought-after compensation.
Before his brief stint as State Minister, Fahumy held positions as a member of the Civil Service Commission and as the Maldivian Ambassador to Malaysia.
The circumstances surrounding his departure from the Foreign Affairs role in the new government remain undisclosed.
