Ahmed Siddiq, currently serving as a state minister in the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, has been appointed chairman of the National Drug Agency (NDA).

Siddiq was appointed as chairman two months after the former chairman, Lubna Zahir Hussain, was changed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Lubna was appointed to the position of chairman last year on 24 June.

The NDA is responsible for conducting rehabilitation programs for those arrested regarding drug-related crimes and working towards reintegrating them into society.

NDA is often under criticism by the public, however, for failure to conduct adequate programs for rehab patients. Recently, two staff members of the NDA were arrested in drug-related cases. One of the two was arrested for drug use and possession, after police found a rubber packet on him with a substance which was suspected to be drugs.

The other member, who was identified by the police as Mohamed Faseeh, a peer mentor at the NDA, was detained on allegations of providing drugs to clients undergoing rehabilitation and sexually exploiting them.
