Widowhood is another prominent category among the elderly, accounting for 29% of the overall demographic. However, it’s worth noting a significant divergence between genders in this category as well. A higher percentage of elderly women, at 47%, are widowed, compared to 11% of elderly men.
Divorced individuals make up 11% of the elderly population, with a slightly higher representation among women (12%) compared to men (9%). This suggests that while divorce is relatively less common among the elderly, gender differences persist in this category as well.
In contrast, a very small proportion of the elderly population have never been married, constituting just 1% of the demographic, with a slightly higher representation among men (1%) than women (0%).
The findings of this report highlight the complex dynamics of marital status among the elderly in the Maldives, with notable differences between men and women.
