Stats Shows 7.9% Disability Rate Among Adults Aged 36-64

The Maldives Bureau of Statistics has revealed that 7.9% (9,996 individuals) of adults aged 36 to 64 are living with disabilities, indicating a correlation between age and disability prevalence.

The study encompassed an analysis of different age groups. For children aged 5 to 17, the prevalence of disabilities was noted at 3.8%, representing a total of 3,410 individuals. Within the age bracket of 18 to 35, 3.1% (3,602 individuals) faced similar challenges. Furthermore, a substantial 36% (7,402 individuals) of individuals aged 65 and above reported experiencing disabilities.

Statistics reveal a decline in disability rates from 2019 to 2023, indicating a positive trend. Among individuals aged 5 to 17, the prevalence has decreased from 4.4% to 3.8%, while the age group of 18 to 35 experienced a decline from 4.2% to 3.1%. The most substantial change is observed in the 36 to 64 age range, where the prevalence has dropped from 11.7% in 2019 to 7.9% in 2023.

The research extended its focus to assess the prevalence of disabilities across various atolls in the Maldives.

Dhaalu Atoll has reported the lowest disability prevalence in the Maldives study, with a rate of 5.3%. In contrast, Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Meemu Atoll have reported the highest disability prevalence, both registering at 9.6%.
