Statistics released by the Maldives Bureau of Statistics on World Children’s Day reveal that the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) extends a monthly allowance to 5,443 individuals serving as single parents, the majority of whom are single mothers.

The NSPA’s support also extends to 148 temporary guardians who receive a post-parent allowance.

Statistics highlight that children constitute 31 percent of the Maldives’ population, totaling 119,159 children, comprising 61,150 boys and 58,009 girls.

Within this demographic, 38 percent of children reside in the capital city of Male’, numbering 45,252, while 73,907 children are distributed across other islands.

Notably, the data indicates that 4.5 percent of boys and 3.1 percent of girls are identified as children with special needs.

A concerning aspect revealed by the statistics is that one in three children in the Maldives lives in multi-dimensional poverty. This index gauges the percentage of households experiencing deprivation across dimensions such as monetary poverty, education, and basic infrastructure services.
