The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has taken over the provision of electricity, water, and sewerage services in Huraa, Kaafu Atoll.

The transition was formalised through a signing ceremony held at STELCO’s head office, where a service transfer agreement was signed between STELCO and Fenaka Corporation Limited, which previously managed the island’s utility services.

The agreement was signed by Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Najah and STELCO Deputy Managing Director Dr Ali Azwar. As part of the transition, 32 Fenaka employees who had been providing utility services in Huraa have been transferred to STELCO to ensure continuity in operations.

With the change, Huraa becomes the final island in Kaafu Atoll to be integrated into STELCO’s utility service network.

Huraa MP Anara Naeem stated that the transition fulfils a long-standing expectation of the island’s residents, noting that other islands in the atoll have already been receiving services from STELCO.

Fenaka Managing Director Najah described the transfer as the conclusion of Fenaka’s operations in Huraa and expressed hope that the change would mark the beginning of a new phase for the island.

Dr Azwar said STELCO would continue to provide services to Huraa at the same level as other islands and is planning further development projects to improve the island’s utility infrastructure.

STELCO currently provides electricity to 36 islands, water services to 25 islands, and sewerage services to 24 islands across the Greater Malé region as well as Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, and Vaavu Atolls.
