The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed plans to establish a new electric vehicle charging station in Malé, marking a step towards promoting environmentally sustainable transport in the capital.

Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting the government’s green initiatives. “The station is currently under construction and will serve both four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles,” Fahmy said.
He also noted that the initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s environmental policies aimed at reducing the country’s carbon footprint and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles.
Fahmy further confirmed that the Male’ City Council has pledged its full cooperation in the project, ensuring smooth progress.
The EV station is inspired by South Korea’s model, which boasts the highest density of public charging stations globally, with one station for every three vehicles. The project was initially proposed by President Muizzu during his tenure as Mayor of Malé, with the Transport Committee of the Male’ City Council responsible for the early studies and plans.
This new charging facility is seen as a critical infrastructure development to support the growing interest in electric vehicles, providing essential services to both prospective and existing EV users in the Maldives.
